What happens next? No one knows. Some people find it in ambient dreamland, some in introspection, in brave and outspoken eccentricity. This week’s selection had a little of all of these and more. We enjoyed the folky charm of Gabriel Carter (with harmonica!) and (in a very different way) the controlled chaos of Lukas Valkucak.
Other highlights: Lord Nap “surprize”, Gregory Frost “Insta-Junkie”, and Aquatic Lights “Some Things Go As Planned and Then They’re Gone.”
Tracks of the week:
Lukas Valkucak’s “S-Funk” sounds like a bunch of Slovakians hanging out singing funky licks until the guitar solo kicks in and then it gets genuinely funky to our great delight. Runner up: “ZUS Apokalypsa” by the same group for having the artistic vision to drop what sounds like an actual apocalypse into the middle of their song. Fortunately, things gets better (maybe we’re in heaven?) and pretty soon there’s a trumpet solo but for a minute or two there…..
