In the recent category, there was La Souterraine, our favorite Souterrainian label with enjoyable dance pop from Gatien and Jaseur (separately — they are not a duo). Also, a rather remarkable “Bolero” from Mexican Institute of Sound and some nouveau R&B from GC OConnor.
On the “back in the day” tip, Slave with “Slide” (all 7 minutes), Tom Browne’s “Funkin’ For Jamaica,” and Talking Heads “Life During Wartime.” Echoing in from the time tunnel was Duke Ellington’s 1920s band with “It Don’t Mean A Thing, If It Ain’t Got That Swing.”
