And lo, on the heels of my post to the contrary, a burst of activity from American musicians, ending the European dominance on Bandcamp since, oh, January. But this week, there were American artists and more than one, maybe as many as five, and that’s a big jump. Here at IndieDisco, we are rooting for our fellow Americans to pick it up and go with it. Perhaps we will.
This week’s top vote getter for band of the week is Gold Dust, from Easthampton, MA, a quartet led by songwriter and former punk rocker Stephen Pierce. On the new album, In The Shade Of The Living Light, they are further assisted by over a dozen artist from around the area, including J Mascis on sitar. The lead single, as it were, is entitled “An Early Translation of a Later Work.” Multi-layered, noisy but melodic, this a song you feel as much as listen to.
Louie Zong, our favorite LA self produced songwriter and musician, has a new mini album of songs inspired by snakes called Seven Snake Songs. No reason, he just felt like writing a lot of snake songs. We espcially liked the opener, “Sunbeam Seeker.”
Wyatt Blair from who knows where, possibly Texas, has a solid new album of creditable pop rock called Smoke and Mirrors. We played the hit, “Don’t Stop The Feeling,” and our own fave “Living in Los Angeles.”
Thomas Oboe Lee, prolific composer of inspired vignettes and short works, has a new and courageous album out consisting of 20 pieces, each evoking a particular woman in his life. Entitled Visions Fugitives, Lee chose this theme after running across an obscure Prokofiev work of the same name. In typical Oboe Lee fashion, off he went, and two weeks later this work — all 52 minutes of it — was created. We loved it, as a complete piano work, but our favorite movement was the Allegretto entitled Haesoo — just beautiful.
Not to be unfair to our cousins across the pond who have been carrying us musically for lo these many months, we especially liked the new ep from Manchester, UK artist Scotch Bonnets, who address the situation, such as it is, with resigned flair and je ne sais quoi. Apologies in advance for the French expression.
And now, to the sunset, oh wait, that’s next week.
