Time may be elsewhere but we are here on planet Earth, enjoying the last dregs of summer, the warm breezes, the sunny vistas, and sadly, the very first colored leaves of autumn peeping out of the greenery. Like the foliage, the music of this week pointed us toward fall – Violent Femmes, Hiss Golden Messenger, […]
Radio
Civil Defense – August 7, 2019
Here in later summer, the music biz can get a bit slow, but not on Bubble Wrap where we grab the new tunes as fast as they bubble up. This week, a double dip of new indie and pop from The Sour Notes, The Nude Party, Lower Dens, Shannon Lay, and Luke and the Lonely, as well as new tunes from more established acts such as Haim and the New Pornographers. Interstitially, we dug back for oldies from Bruce, Fishbone, and even a civil defense warning from Groucho Marx (did you know you can survive a nuclear strike in your bunker with just three days of water? )
Nothing To Lose, Nothing To Prove – July 31, 2019
The music we play each week depends a lot on what music we come across the week before. By the luck of the draw, this week’s lineup featured a lot of women, including Erin Rae, Brijean, kellen, Julia Clara, Barrie, Kate Davis, Grace ives, and Perfect Blue. From folk to electro, sweetly sincere to slyly […]
On and Off The Grid – July 17, 2019
As the heatwave spread across the country and the storms to come gathered force, we stayed cool with a low key assortment of tunes from Purple Mountains (David Berman) “Margaritas at the Mall” to Daisy O’Connor’s “Cookies n Weed.” Kid Creole aided and abbetted, Generationals broke their silence, and Stef Chura just had to Scream! This and more on the latest Bubble Wrap radio show.
Scaring The Children – July 10, 2019
Dry County – July 3, 2019
When July 4 rolls around, you know it’s summer. Here on Bubble Wrap, we continue to wonder what this summer’s hit will be. Read on for one prediction. Digging deep into the archives, we brought out some antiquated oldies from the days when recording anything onto anything was a marvel. That and summer songs galore, a few new releases, and a seasonal story from Lynda Barry about the joy of fireworks.
Here We Go Again – June 26, 2019
Perhaps it is that in the sum-sum-summertime, the living gets easy and so do the tunes. We didn’t challenge ourselves too much this week on Bubble Wrap radio. Rather, we caressed our listeners gently with the soft breezes of pop, throwing in a little funk for zest. L-Vis 1990, more Boogarins, The Truehearts, Scone Cash Players, some random covers, and a whole bunch of twofers must suffice to summarize the evening.
Good Old Summertime – June 19, 2019
Lettin’ It Slide – June 5, 2019
On Bubble Wrap this week, new music from Bourgeois Mystics, Cate Le Bon, Lady Lark, and Maude, to name a few. Also a Kid Creole flashback, a new single from Mavis Staples, weird covers, unremembered oldies, and more. Kid Creole. Kid Creole’s satire is like a stilletto. He may be smiling but you’re stabbed all […]
Summer on My Mind – June 12, 2019
Early summer has a way of feeling undefined. Anything can happen but nothing has yet. Still there are trends to be followed…. This week’s trend on Bubble Wrap was that there was no trend. We heard a lot from Boogarins who did a Lagniappe session recently, a trippy track from Ingrid Chavez who is apparently famous, and some sweet pop from Allah-Las. Also, and as always, covers, funky stuff, and a few seminal numbers from the past still worth remembering.
City of Fun – May 29, 2019
This week, we had the unusual pleasure of playing music by a local band, those popularizers of so-called ‘heart rock’ known as Yellowfront, from the bonny burg of Brattleboro, VT. Also on the list, newer releases from Dream Syndicate, Amyl and the Sniffers, Sinkane, among others. Sinkane. Most of the bands that do Lagniappe Sessions […]
Tumult for the Pedigreed – May 22, 2019
Lots of calls this week from the faithful listeners of radioland. We appreciate hearing from them. Otherwise, radio is a bit like talking to yourself, or in our case, playing each other songs and then talking about them. This week on Bubble Wrap, we talked about the luscious weather, our annoyance with “the Man,” and […]
Working It Out – May 15, 2019
Over a substrata of new equipment shock, the themes for this week’s Bubble Wrap show were partying, relationships, and…that’s about it really. The perennial themes of pop music. If you were listening, you might have heard Ohio Players and En Vogue, or Lou Reed and Sting, or MorMor and Pure Bathing Culture. You would have […]
People’s Post – May 8, 2019
We missed a show on May Day but we made up for it this week, haphazardly but with gusto. There are times when it seems necessary to spout views and opinions and this is one of them. Bubble Wrap kicked off with Sonic Youth and closed with Superfonicos, and somehow it all came out right. New music, old complaints, live readings from old books, and a pair of tributes to the gallant Gilets Jaunes. What does this mean? We haven’t a clue.
